Paleo Foods to Avoid with Ulcerative Colitis

Although the paleo diet works wonders for gut health and autoimmune diseases like Ulcerative Colitis, it is not designed specifically for these diseases. Because Crohn’s and Colitis are IBDs (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases) it is wise to be cautious of inflammatory foods. Here is a list of foods that you want to eat in moderation as they may trip up your digestion and compromise your intestinal lining.

Please note that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Certain foods may irritate some people and others will be completely fine with it. Keep a journal of food that you know bothers you.

NUTS

The paleo diet recommends eating very minimal nuts anyways. But here is another reason why: They contain Omega 6 fatty acids. These aren’t terrible, but they aren’t great either. Our bodies fight inflammation with Omega 3 and a tight balance between these two is key. The ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 is important because a diet high in Omega 6 is prone to inflammation more than one with a close balance with Omega 3. Omega 6 are commonly found in oils that aren’t paleo anyways (ie, soybean oil, corn oil, etc). Read more by Chris Kresser here.

So stop eating 983745 paleo cookies, okay Cookie Monster?!

coffee-black

COFFEE and CAFFEINE

This stimulates your intestines. Putting them into overdrive is never a good idea. For those of you who drink coffee in the morning to poop – stop it. Drink a ton of water and eat your fruits and veggies instead!

broccoli-cabbage-brussels-sprouts

BROCCOLI/BRUSSELS SPROUTS/CABBAGE

These high fiber foods cause gas and bloating. As sexy as it sounds, keep ’em at a minimum. For everyone’s sake.

apple-cider

APPLE CIDER

For the same reason as the above foods, it contains a lot of concentrated fiber. So if you’re feeling festive at the orchard next fall – beware.

CARBONATED BEVERAGES

Yes, even carbonated water. This causes gas. Why do you need the bubbles? It’s going to end up getting all bloated in your tummy anyways. Sometimes even natural occurring carbonation in Kombucha can blow you up!

SPICY FOODS

This should speak for itself, but if it doesn’t here is a clip from the film Along Came Polly as a reference.

ALCOHOL

(including wine, tequila, and other semi-paleo approved drinks)

If you’re going to cheat on paleo these should be your last options:

  • Beans
  • Dairy with lactose
  • Gluten
